 My Take on Warrior Priests

So I've gone through the motions of leveling Warrior Priests (known hereafter as WPs) since early Beta. The class hasn't changed that extensively since late beta, since a necessary decrease in overall damage output (once upon a time WPs did MDPS damage in addition to healing through the use of Divine Assault).

I wanted to provide some feedback of my experiences, both to start discussion and to see if anyone else has had comparable or alternate experiences.

The WP is a very interesting class, and one who is best used as a 'just behind the front line' healer. While a WP does wear medium armor (medium robes), there is still a large disparity between medium and heavy armor and WPs are not tanks. The WP does have a higher level of base damage mitigation over other Order healers due to its armor, but does not get many other situational survival tools until much later in its career comparatively.

I've played around with most classes on the Order side and would immediately rate the WP as the top solo PvE class for Order. Their high armor rating, combined with great healing and very respectable DPS with a 2-handed hammer makes them able to take down comparably leveled heroes 1 on 1 with little to no problem. When working with a tank, they can provide both healing and off-tanking duties in PvE through the tank's use of guard and other mitigation tools.

In PvE, the WP is far different. While their armor helps keep them alive, unlike most healers the WP is right in the thick of combat. It is very common to be focus-fired by the enemy very early in combat, as they can easily recognize a WP from far away. A WP can heal from a distance, but does not generate Righteous Fury when not hitting opponents with their attacks and must resort to using a 'medidate'-like skill to gain any RF back. The WP also has no ranged Dots and only a very weak ranged cast direct damage, which means the WP must be in melee combat to contribute any damage.

Plusses:

1. Decent melee damage
2. Great PvE versatility
3. Better general survivability over other healers

Negatives:
1. Must be in melee range to contribute damage and build up "mana" (RF)
2. Strongest baseline heal is based off of melee damage (silly concept, but it does heal and do damage at the same time)
3. Easy to get focus-fired by enemies as you are typically near the front line.

The WP is a fun class, and a good choice for those who find themselves soloing a lot. However, I've found the AM and RP to be better dedicated healers, and when paired with a good group, contribute greater to both healing AND damage meters due to the assortment of DOTs and ranged attacks they have.

Cheers!

Having only played around on a WP I can say it's nice to have my general impressions validated here. Coming from a stint of playing a full Rejuv Cleric in DAoC for some time the combat/heal dynamic has been tough for me to adjust to. I'm still thinking in terms of two modes: "in combat fighting" or "out of combat healing". So far I've had minimal success at either.

I'm going to keep tweaking away on my WP mostly cause I like getting better at things I currently suck at but I can see how I go from where I am to what Talin is talking about here....

S'ok. Half the game is PvE!

I am currently leveling a WP (lvl 13 now) and I am loving it. I played a paladin in WoW for three years, and I love the melee/heal combo. I enjoy challenges and I enjoy RvR and Scenarios with my WP. My tactic is to try and run in beside the tanks, and heal myself/them. It can be rough, but I enjoy it. I know that their healing and dps isn't that great, but I just like being in melee combat, and I healing is always a good thing :D

Anyways, that's my opinion. might have to take a break from my Ironbreaker to level him up.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the WP, Dorik. They are a great class, and even if they don't put up crazy numbers in most cases, they have a higher level of versatility and survivability than other healers.

I also agree that being in melee combat and smacking enemies with a big hammer is oddly satisfying. Best of luck with the class!
